Service Animals

Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.

Under the ADA, service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls

What does “do work or perform tasks” mean?

The dog must be trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability.

Are emotional support, therapy, comfort, or companion animals considered servicE animals under the ADA?

No. These terms are used to describe animals that provide comfort just by being with a person. Because they have not been trained to perform a specific job or task, they do not qualify as service animals under the ADA

Service animals must be under handler’s control at all times, and may not be left unattended in the room at any time. Although Traveler’s Inn Medford does not asses a nightly pet fee for service animals, the hotel is permitted to charge the same fee for damages as charged to other guests for any damage to the property or hotel rooms. Guests with service animals are still required to provide a valid signed credit card for incidentals or provide a $300 cash deposit, as any other hotel guest would be required to provide.
